Surkanda Devi Temple

Chamba, Uttarakhand, India
The Surkanda Devi Temple is a highly revered Hindu shrine dedicated to Goddess Durga, perched at a staggering altitude of 2,757 meters in the Tehri Garhwal district. According to ancient mythology, this is the sacred spot where the head of Goddess Sati fell while Lord Shiva was performing the Tanda va, making it one of the 51 Shakti Peethas. The temple offers a breathtaking 360-degree view of the snow-clad Himalayan ranges, including peaks like Bandarpunch, Kedarnath, and Chaukhamba. Visitors can reach the temple via a scenic 2 KM trek from the base at Kaddukhal or use the newly inaugurated ropeway service. The atmosphere here is deeply spiritual, filled with the scent of deodar forests and the sound of temple bells echoing through the misty mountains.
