Todar Mal Fort

Fatehgarh Sahib, Punjab, India
Todar Mal Fort, popularly known as Jahaz Haveli, is not just a building but a monument to human compassion and sacrifice. It was the residence of Diwan Todar Mal, a wealthy merchant and official in the court of Nawab Wazir Khan. The haveli is etched in history for the events of 1705, when the young er sons of Guru Gobind Singh Ji were martyred. When the cruel Governor refused to give land for their cremation, Todar Mal purchased a small piece of land by covering it with gold coins (ashrafis) placed vertically. This act is recorded as the purchase of the most expensive land in human history. The haveli today stands in a state of "romantic decay," with its red-brick walls and arched windows telling stories of a bygone era of Mughal grandeur. Although much of it is in ruins, the SGPC and INTACH have taken steps to restore it. The structure is called Jahaz Haveli because its design, with tiered levels and a high plinth, resembles a large ship sailing through the landscape. For visitors, it offers a somber and reflective atmosphere, standing as a testament to a man who risked his entire fortune and life for the sake of humanity and righteousness. It is a vital stop for anyone following the Sikh Heritage Trail in Punjab.
