Amaravathi Dam & Crocodile Park
The Amaravathi Dam is a majestic structure built across the Amaravathi River in 1957. It is situated within the Indira Gandhi Wildlife Sanctuary and serves as a vital source for irrigation and flood control in the region. The dam is widely recognized for its massive reservoir that spans over 9.31 s quare kilometers. Adjacent to the dam is the famous Amaravathi Sagar Crocodile Farm, which was established in 1976 to conserve the Mugger Crocodile species. This park is the largest of its kind in India, housing nearly 100 crocodiles of various ages. Visitors can witness these ancient reptiles basking in the sun along the reservoir banks. The area is also a haven for birdwatchers, with many migratory birds visiting the catchment area. The lush greenery of the Anamalai Hills provides a stunning backdrop to the blue waters of the dam. Families often visit the well-maintained park located at the foot of the dam for picnics. The dam's height is about 33.53 meters, offering panoramic views from the top. It is a perfect blend of engineering and nature conservation.

Its total length is approximately 1,507 meters, and it reaches a maximum height of 33. 53 meters from the river bed. The reservoir has a storage capacity of roughly 4 TMC, although siltation has slightly reduced this over decades. The spillway consists of multiple radial gates designed to release excess water during the peak Monsoon season. The architecture of the crocodile park includes specialized concrete pits and naturalistic breeding ponds designed to mimic the riverine habitat. -
