Arulmigu Masani Amman Temple
The Masani Amman Temple is one of the most unique and revered shrines in Tamil Nadu. It is dedicated to Masani Amman, a powerful form of the Goddess Shakti. Unlike most Hindu deities who are in a standing or sitting posture, the main idol here is in a reclining (lying down) position. The idol is 17 feet long and is painted in vibrant colors, holding a skull, a serpent, a trident, and a small drum. Legend says that Lord Rama stopped here to pray during his search for Sita, making it a site of great antiquity. Another historical story tells of an innocent girl who was executed by a local king for eating a mango from his grove; the villagers later built this temple in her memory. The temple is situated on the banks of the Uppar River, surrounded by coconut groves. It is famously known as a place where people seek justice for their grievances. Devotees believe that the Goddess has the power to cure illnesses and solve complex personal problems. The atmosphere is deeply spiritual, filled with the sounds of chants and the fragrance of incense. It is a major pilgrimage site that draws thousands of visitors every week, especially on auspicious days.
