Damgmal Jetty

Kendrapada, Odisha, India
Damgmal Jetty (often spelled Dangamal) is the primary operational hub and entry point for tourists exploring the core area of Bhitarkanika National Park. It serves as the vital link between the mainland and the dense mangrove forests. The jetty is where the Forest Department's motorboats are docked and where the majority of wildlife safaris commence. More than just a transit point, the area around the jetty houses the Crocodile Breeding and Research Centre, where visitors can see crocodiles of all sizes, from tiny hatchlings to massive adults. The jetty itself is a floating structure designed to rise and fall with the high and low tides of the Baitarani river system. The surrounding area is beautifully landscaped with nature trails, Interpretation Centres, and eco-tourism cottages. Historically, this was a strategic point for the Kanika Estate kings. Today, it is a bustling center for conservationists and tourists alike. Standing on the jetty, one can often see spotted deer coming to the water's edge on the opposite bank or crocodiles surfacing nearby. It is the starting point for the famous boat journey to Bird Island and Habalikhati. The atmosphere at the jetty is one of anticipation, as travelers board boats to venture into the "Mini Amazon."
