Gahirmatha Marine Sanctuary is a globally renowned ecological wonder located in the Kendrapada district of Odisha. It was officially declared a marine sanctuary in September 1997 to protect the endangered Olive Ridley sea turtles. Spanning an area of approximately 1,435 square kilometers, it serves as the most significant nesting ground for these marine creatures in the world. The sanctuary extends from the Dhamra River mouth to the Brahmani River mouth, encompassing a vast stretch of the Bay of Bengal coastline. Every year, hundreds of thousands of turtles migrate from the South Pacific Ocean to this specific beach for mass nesting, a phenomenon known as Arribada.
