Danish Fort

Karaikal, Tamil Nadu, India
Fort Dansborg, commonly known as the Danish Fort, is a 400-year-old Scandinavian structure located on the shores of the Bay of Bengal in Tranquebar (Tharangambadi). Built in 1620 by Danish Admiral Ove Gjedde under an agreement with King Ragunatha Nayak, it is the second-largest Danish fort in the w orld. The fort served as a hub for the Danish East India Company, specializing in the export of cotton textiles. Today, it stands as a preserved monument housing a museum filled with Danish artifacts, manuscripts, and 17th-century weaponry. The town of Tharangambadi itself feels like a European village, with its "Land Gate" and cobblestone streets. The sound of the waves (which gave the town its name) adds a hauntingly beautiful atmosphere to this historic site.
