Doling Gompa
Doling Gompa, also known simply as Doling Monastery, is a serene Buddhist retreat located in the quiet village of Barfung. Belonging to the Nyingmapa (Red Hat) sect of Tibetan Buddhism, it was founded in 1718 by Lama Rigdzin Longyang. The monastery is unique because it is situated on a small hilloc k that offers a 360-degree view of the surrounding mountains and forests. One of the most fascinating aspects of this place is the collection of sacred relics, including the footprint of Lama Dorjelingpa and a footprint of the horse of the deity Kanchenjunga, which are preserved in stone. The monastery has a very traditional feel, far removed from the modern constructions of the main town. It is surrounded by thousands of prayer flags that flutter in the wind, creating a spiritual shield of peace. The resident monks are friendly and often share stories of the monastery's history with curious travelers.
