The original structure was built in 1855 under the reign of the French Emperor Napoleon III, with the renowned architect Louis Guerre behind its design. This direct patronage from the French imperial government highlights its importance in the colonial landscape. It was modeled after the famous Basilica at Lourdes in Southern France, establishing a strong architectural and spiritual link to the mother country. Unique Construction Material and Color: The church is famously known for its unique construction, using fine limestone mixed with a unique ingredient: the white part of the egg (often yolk/lime mixture), which gives the exterior a distinct, smooth texture that resembles white marble. While it was originally entirely white, earning it the local nickname 'White Chapel' (Kaps Koil), the exterior was later painted in a distinctive, beautiful pastel peach and lime color, which gives it its current serene and highly photogenic appearance. Cultural Inclusivity and Language: The church holds a unique distinction as the only church in Puducherry to offer masses in three languages: French, Tamil, and English. This practice underscores the city's rich cultural blend and the church's commitment to serving its diverse congregation, including the local Tamil population and the remaining community of French descendants.
