History Of Jwalamukhi Temple

Palampur, Himachal Pradesh, India
Jwalamukhi Temple is a unique and legendary shrine located in the Kangra district, dedicated to Goddess Jwala, the deity of flaming mouth. This temple is world-famous because it does not contain a traditional idol; instead, the goddess is worshipped in the form of nine eternal natural flames. These flames emerge from the crevices of a rock and have been burning for centuries without any known source of fuel. Scientific studies have been conducted to find the source of the gas, but the mystery remains unsolved, adding to the temple's divine aura. It is one of the 51 Shakti Peethas, where it is believed that the tongue of Goddess Sati fell. The temple has a rich history involving emperors and kings, most notably Emperor Akbar, who tried to extinguish the flames but eventually became a devotee. The golden dome of the temple was a gift from Maharaja Ranjit Singh, signifying its immense importance in Sikh and Hindu history. The temple is located in a beautiful valley surrounded by the Kalidhar hills. The atmosphere inside the temple is filled with the scent of incense and the chanting of prayers. The nine flames are named after different forms of the goddess, such as Mahakali, Annapurna, and Saraswati. Devotees offer milk, water, and sweets to the flames as a mark of devotion. The complex also features a small water pond that appears to be boiling but is actually cold to the touch. This temple is a symbol of the indestructible power of nature and faith. A visit to Jwalamukhi is considered essential for those completing the pilgrimage of the nine goddesses in North India.
