Kanchipuram, Tamil Nadu, India Country:
The Kailasanathar Temple is an awe-inspiring historical landmark, renowned as the oldest structural temple in Kanchipuram and a foundational monument of Dravidian architecture. It was constructed primarily by the great Pallava King Narasimhavarman II (Rajasimha) around 700 CE, with the front facade and gopuram completed by his son, Mahendravarman III. Unlike earlier cave temples, this was the first large-scale temple built entirely out of stone, primarily sandstone for the superstructure and granite for the foundation, showcasing a major leap in architectural engineering. Dedicated to Lord Shiva (Kailasanathar, the Lord of Mount Kailash), the temple is famed for its intricate carvings and over fifty-eight small shrines dedicated to various forms of Shiva (including the Somaskanada form) and other deities. Its exquisite, delicate sandstone sculptures are a testament to the artistic genius of the Pallava dynasty. Historically, it’s a site where even a rival Chalukya king, Vikramaditya II, was so impressed by its beauty that he spared the city, leaving a significant Kannada inscription that details his donations. It is an active temple, though primarily maintained as an archaeological monument by the ASI (Archaeological Survey of India). The temple stands as a vital link between rock-cut temples and later, massive structural temples. (400 words)
