Raj Niwas, formerly the Palais du Gouvernement, is the official residence of the Lieutenant Governor of Puducherry and stands as the most iconic symbol of the city’s French colonial power. Built in the 18th century on the site of a former citadel, its construction was a testament to the might and architectural ambition of French India. The imposing mansion is surrounded by lush green lawns and is situated right across from the Jawaharlal Nehru statue and Bharati Park. It is a restricted access building; hence, visitors primarily admire its external grandeur and historical significance from the gates and surrounding park. The architecture is a superb fusion of classical French and traditional Indian styles, incorporating features necessary for the tropical climate. It was the seat of power for the French Governors, most famously Joseph François Dupleix, and its continued use as the residence of the head of the Union Territory government ensures its political and historical importance remains central to Puducherry's identity.
