How To Reach Azamgarh Fort
Azamgarh, Uttar Pradesh, India
Azamgarh Fort, located in the Badarka area, is the very soul of the city's history. It was founded in 1665 by Azam Khan, the son of Vikramajit, who gave the city its name. The fort stands on the banks of the Tamsa (Tons) River and was once a formidable military outpost. Although much of the structu re is now in ruins, the massive stone walls and the remnants of the gateways still evoke a sense of the Mughal and post-Mughal architectural grandeur. The fort complex also houses a historic mosque and the tombs of the founding family, which are significant for their intricate stonework and historical inscriptions. Over the centuries, the fort has witnessed various battles and shifts in power, eventually falling into the hands of the British before becoming a protected monument. Today, it serves as a quiet reminder of the city's aristocratic past. The area around the fort, known as Lakdi Ki Taal, is famous for its local legends and the Madilah Sarovar, a lake associated with the fort's water management system. For history buffs, the fort offers a chance to see the transition of architectural styles from Rajput to Islamic influences. Despite the encroachment of modern buildings, the core area of the fort remains an evocative site, especially during sunset when the light hits the weathered red stones. It is a place where one can sit and imagine the courtly life of the 17th century. The local government has recently initiated restoration works to preserve the remaining structures. Visiting the fort is like stepping back in time, providing a stark contrast to the rapidly developing city surrounding it. It is an essential stop for anyone wishing to understand the origins of Azamgarh and the legacy of its founders. :
