How To Reach Chinnakallar Falls

Valparai, Tamil Nadu, India
The Chinnakallar Falls is a spectacular and relatively wild waterfall situated near the remote Chinnakallar village, approximately 24 KMS from the main Valparai town center. This stunning cascade is renowned for being one of the three places in India that receives the highest rainfall, competing wit h Mawsynram and Cherrapunji in Meghalaya, hence its local nickname, "South Cherrapunji." This heavy and consistent rainfall throughout the year ensures that the waterfall is almost always flowing with considerable force, presenting a truly roaring and majestic sight. The area is encapsulated by extremely dense evergreen forests, giving it a raw and untamed natural beauty that appeals strongly to adventure seekers and deep nature lovers. Accessing the main viewing area requires an adventurous trek of about 600 meters through a narrow path, often lined with thick bushes and rugged terrain, which adds an element of excitement and challenge to the visit. A significant feature of the site is the Hanging Bridge constructed over the waterfall, which offers mesmerizing, though sometimes dizzying, views of the roaring water beneath and the dense, misty greenery surrounding it. Due to its location deep within the Anamalai Tiger Reserve area, visitors must be mindful of the presence of local wildlife, including Wild Elephants and Bison, and it is highly advisable to visit with a local guide for safety. The area is perpetually shrouded in clouds and mist, reflecting the continuous humidity and heavy rainfall, making it a powerful and humbling experience with the untamed natural elements of the Western Ghats.

By Road: Chinnakallar Falls are about 24 KMS from Valparai Bus Station. The road is scenic but can be winding and slightly rough in the final section. Private jeeps or sturdy taxis are recommended for this route. Local buses may go up to the village, but the trekking point is a short distance from the bus stop.

By Local Transport: Hiring a local jeep or a private taxi from Valparai is the most reliable and safe way to reach the trekking start point, especially considering the route's remote nature and the potential for wildlife sightings.
