How to Reach

By Air: Fly into Leh and then drive towards Khalste on the Leh-Srinagar Highway. Domkhar is about 160 KMS from Leh, making it a long but scenic drive. The flight to Leh is the most practical way to start your journey from any major Indian city. From the airport, it's best to hire a taxi that is familiar with the Sham Valley region.

By Road: The drive from Leh to Domkhar takes about 4 to 5 hours through beautiful landscapes. You follow the NH1 towards Srinagar and take the turn towards Skurbuchan after passing Khalste. The road is mostly paved and follows the Indus River for a significant portion. It is a less-traveled route, so you can enjoy the peace and quiet of the countryside.

By Local Transport: There are local buses from Leh to Skurbuchan that pass through Domkhar, but they are infrequent. A private taxi is the most reliable way to reach the sanctuary and explore the area at your own pace. Many people include Domkhar as part of a longer trip to Lamayuru or Dha-Hanu. Biking is also a great option as the traffic is light and the scenery is stunning.

By Train: Similar to other locations, the nearest railway station is Jammu Tawi. The journey from the station to Domkhar involves a multi-day road trip through Srinagar and Kargil. It is a scenic route but very exhausting and time-consuming. Most tourists find it much more convenient to fly into Leh and then take a taxi for the final leg of the journey.
