How to Reach
By Road: Dras is located right on the Srinagar-Leh National Highway (NH1). If you are coming from Srinagar, you will pass through Sonamarg and cross the famous Zoji La pass. The drive is one of the most adventurous in India, with stunning views of glaciers and peaks. From Leh, it is a longer drive through Kargil, offering a chance to see the changing landscape of Ladakh.
By Local Transport: Shared taxis and JKSRTC buses operate regularly between Srinagar, Kargil, and Leh, stopping at Dras. This is the most affordable way for solo travelers and backpackers to reach the town. Private taxis are also available but can be expensive for long distances. Once in Dras, the town is small enough to be explored on foot or by local auto-rickshaws.
By Train: The nearest railway station is Jammu Tawi, located about 440 KMS from Dras. From the station, you must take a taxi or bus to Srinagar and then continue to Dras. This route is open only during the summer months when the passes are clear of snow. It is a long journey but offers a complete experience of the transition from the plains to the high mountains.
