How To Reach Jain Temple

Wayanad, Kerala, India
The Jain Temple at Sulthan Bathery is a majestic 13th-century structure that stands as a silent witness to the religious and military history of Wayanad. Built during the reign of the Vijayanagara Empire, the temple is dedicated to the Jain Tirthankara, Ananthanatha Swami. It is constructed entirel y of granite and showcases the exquisite Dravidian style of architecture. In the 18th century, the temple gained historical notoriety when Tipu Sultan of Mysore used it as a battery (ammunition store) during his invasion of the Malabar region. This event led to the town being renamed from Ganapathivattom to Sulthan Bathery. Despite its military use in the past, the temple has been restored and is now a protected monument under the Archaeological Survey of India. The interiors are minimalist yet spiritual, featuring square granite pillars adorned with carvings of floral motifs, snakes, and deities. The sanctum sanctorum, though now empty of its main idol, still exudes a sense of ancient peace. The temple is surrounded by a well-maintained lawn, making it a quiet retreat from the bustling town. It serves as a prime example of the peaceful co-existence of different cultures in Kerala over the centuries.
