How To Reach Mattancherry Palace

The Mattancherry Palace, despite its common name, the Dutch Palace, was originally built by the Portuguese in 1555 as a gift to the Raja of Kochi, Veera Kerala Varma, in exchange for trading rights. It was later renovated and extended by the Dutch in 1663, which is how it acquired its popular name.

By Air The nearest airport is Cochin International Airport (COK), approximately 45 kilometers away. A taxi from the airport will take about 1. 5 hours to reach Mattancherry. By Train The nearest railway station is Ernakulam Junction (ERS), which is about 15 kilometers from the palace. From ERS, you can take a pre-paid taxi, an auto-rickshaw, or a local bus heading towards Mattancherry. By Road Mattancherry is easily accessible by road from mainland Ernakulam. You can hire a cab or take a local bus. The palace is located on Palace Road. Be aware that the narrow lanes of Jew Town leading up to the palace are often pedestrian-only or have limited vehicle access. By Local Transport (Walk or Auto-Rickshaw) If you are already in Fort Kochi, the palace is about 2 kilometers away. The most enjoyable way to cover this short distance is by a scenic auto-rickshaw ride through the historic streets, or by a pleasant 20-30 minute walk, which allows you to appreciate the old colonial architecture along the way.
