How To Reach New Tehri Town
Kanatal, Uttarakhand, India
General Overview: New Tehri Town is a marvel of modern planning, established to replace the original Old Tehri that was submerged during the dam construction. This town is perched at an altitude ranging from 1550 to 1950 meters, offering a refreshing climate and organized infrastructure that is rare in the hills. Visitors often come here to witness the transition from traditional Garhwali life to a contemporary urban setup. The town serves as the administrative headquarters of the district and is a gateway to numerous high-altitude treks. It features wide roads, residential blocks, and markets that overlook the massive reservoir, creating a unique visual contrast between man-made structures and the raw beauty of the Himalayas. Many travelers find it a peaceful base for exploring the nearby Chamba and Dhanaulti regions. The town is also home to several government buildings and schools, giving it a lively yet serene atmosphere. Walking through its streets, one can enjoy the crisp mountain air and panoramic views of the Tehri Lake. It is particularly famous for its sunset views where the city lights begin to twinkle alongside the reflection of the moon on the water. The relocation of the old residents brought a rich cultural tapestry to this new site, which is celebrated through local festivals and community gatherings. Tourists can find a variety of local eateries serving authentic Garhwali cuisine, making it a culinary stop as well. The town's elevation ensures that it remains relatively cool even during the peak summer months of May and June. For those interested in urban development in a mountain setting, this place is a must-visit example of human resilience.
