How To Reach Polo Ground

Turtuk, Ladakh, India
History and Cultural Significance: The Polo Ground in Turtuk, known locally as Chaugan, is far more than just a sports field; it is a vital center of the Balti cultural and social life in the Nubra Valley. Polo is an ancient sport in Ladakh and Baltistan, having been played for centuries, tracing it s roots to Central Asia. The ground itself represents the rich heritage of the region, which remained closed to the outside world until 2010 after the 1971 Indo-Pakistani War. This field is one of the few active traditional polo grounds where the locals, the Balti people, continue the legacy of their ancestors. Its historical significance is tied to the Yabgo Dynasty, as such grounds were historically patronized by the local Rajas to maintain martial traditions and community cohesion. The Modern Experience: For visitors, the Polo Ground offers a rare glimpse into this unique culture, set against the dramatic backdrop of the Karakoram Range and the lush greenery of the Turtuk oasis. The ground is a focal point for community gatherings, particularly during local festivals where polo matches are held with great fanfare, accompanied by traditional Balti music and dancing. Unlike the manicured fields in other parts of the world, this is a rugged, naturally formed high-altitude field, reflecting the challenging terrain of the region. The view from the ground, overlooking the village and the Shyok River valley, is spectacular, embodying the unique blend of adventure and cultural immersion that defines a visit to Turtuk. The area serves as a tranquil spot for evening strolls and contemplation, away from the narrow alleys of the lower village.

How to Reach

By Air: The nearest major airport is Kushok Bakula Rimpochee Airport (IXL) in Leh, located approximately 205 KMS away. From the airport, you must hire a pre-booked private taxi, or a shared taxi to reach Turtuk. There is no direct flight to Turtuk, and the entire onward journey is by road, taking about 7-8 hours due to the difficult high-mountain passes. Travelers must arrange for the Inner Line Permit (ILP) in Leh before proceeding to Nubra Valley and Turtuk.

By Train: Ladakh has no railway network. The nearest major railway station is Jammu Tawi Railway Station (JAT), which is over 700 KMS away from Leh. This option is only for starting the journey on the mainland. From Jammu Tawi, the traveler must take a long train journey, followed by a taxi or bus to Leh (a multi-day journey), and then the final road journey to Turtuk. This is the least practical option.

By Road: This is the most common and scenic way. The route is from Leh to Turtuk via the Khardung La Pass and Nubra Valley (Diskit/Hunder). The journey is about 205 KMS and takes 7-8 hours by private taxi or pre-booked shared cab. From Leh, one first drives to Hunder (overnight stay recommended for acclimatization) and then proceeds along the Shyok River to Turtuk. State-run bus services exist up to Diskit or Hunder from Leh, but to reach Turtuk from these points, one must rely on local shared taxis or private hire.

By Local Transport: Within Turtuk, the Polo Ground is located on the upper side (Pharol). There is virtually no motorized local transport (autos or taxis) within the small village. The best and only way to reach the Polo Ground from the Turtuk main entry point/Guesthouse Area is by walking (a moderate uphill trek of about 15-20 minutes) through the narrow village alleys and apricot orchards.
