Acclimatization is Key: Turtuk is at a lower altitude than Leh (around 3,000 m vs 3,500 m), but altitude sickness (AMS) is still a risk, especially during the drive. Spend at least one day in Leh before heading to Nubra Valley and carry necessary medications like Diamox. The ground itself is reached by a short, uphill walk, so take your time.
Packing:
Layered Clothing is Essential: Even in summer, nights and early mornings are cold. Pack thermal wear, a fleece jacket, a heavy winter jacket, a windproof and waterproof outer shell, and good trekking shoes for navigating the uneven village pathways and the rough ground.
ID and Permits: Always carry multiple photocopies of your Inner Line Permit (ILP) and Government-issued photo IDs (Aadhaar/Passport/Driving License), as they are checked frequently due to the proximity to the LOC.

Cash is King: There are virtually no ATMs in Turtuk, and digital payments (card/mobile) are non-existent due to poor connectivity. Carry enough cash (Indian Rupees) from Leh or Diskit for your entire stay.
Respect Local Culture: The Balti people are conservative; dress modestly, especially when visiting the Mosque or Royal House, and always ask for permission before taking close-up photos of individuals, particularly women and children. Maintain the quiet, peaceful atmosphere of the village.
