How To Reach Raitong Village
Umsning, Meghalaya, India
Raitong Village holds a special place in the hearts of the Khasi people due to its association with the tragic legend of U Manik Raitong. According to folklore, Manik was a poor orphan who played a bamboo flute so beautifully that he won the heart of a queen. The village is situated on a plateau th at offers stunning views of the surrounding hills and the plains below. Visiting Raitong is like walking through a living storybook. The villagers are proud of their heritage and often recount the tale of the "Manik Raitong" to visitors. The village itself is small and quiet, characterized by traditional Khasi homes and small garden plots. The legend says that a certain species of bamboo that grows here only leans in one direction, towards the place where the legend's climax occurred. Beyond the folklore, Raitong is a beautiful spot for nature lovers. The air is fresh, and the landscape is a vibrant green for most of the year. The community is welcoming and has preserved many of their ancient customs. It is a place where you can experience the "real" Meghalaya, away from the more commercialized spots. The village is also known for its local produce, including wild honey and hand-knitted woolen items. A walk through the village will lead you to various viewpoints where you can see the sunset painting the hills in shades of gold and purple. For those interested in photography, the textures of the old wooden houses and the expressive faces of the elders provide endless inspiration. Raitong Village is not just a destination; it's an emotional experience that connects you to the deep-rooted myths of the Khasi hills. :
