How To Reach Sheesh Mahal

Patiala, Punjab, India
The Sheesh Mahal, or 'Palace of Mirrors', in Patiala is a celebrated structure located within the grounds of the Old Moti Bagh Palace complex (parts of which are now the National Institute of Sports - NIS). Built by Maharaja Narinder Singh (1845–1862), the Mahal is a stunning example of late Sikh and Rajasthani architectural confluence, designed primarily to house the Maharaja's vast art, medal, and painting collection. Its enduring fame, however, comes from the Sheesh Mahal itself—a breathtaking chamber (or sequence of chambers) whose walls and ceilings are intricately inlaid with countless tiny pieces of mirrors and colored glass, creating a dazzling, kaleidoscopic effect, especially when lit. This mirror work is a masterclass in craftsmanship, forming complex geometric, floral, and figural patterns. The Mahal is set in a picturesque location, once featuring a large tank and a suspended rope bridge, the Lakshman Jhula, which connected it to the Bansar Ghar (Natural History Gallery). Today, the complex also houses a large collection of medals from the Maharajas, including rare pieces from Maharaja Ranjit Singh's era. The Mahal is a true artistic treasure trove. Although some areas have deteriorated over time, restoration efforts are ongoing to preserve the delicate mirror work and the beautiful frescoes that adorn other sections of the palace, depicting scenes from Hindu mythology and courtly life. The Sheesh Mahal is not just a palace but a dedicated repository of the Patiala dynasty's artistic and historical wealth.

How to Reach

By Air: The nearest major airport is Chandigarh International Airport (IXC), approximately 65 KMS away. Hire a taxi directly to the Old Moti Bagh Palace/NIS in Patiala (a 1. 5-2 hour drive). Follow the same directions as for the Queen Victoria Railway Coach.

By Train: The Patiala Railway Station (PTA) is about 4 KMS from the Mahal. Take an auto-rickshaw or a taxi directly to the gate of the NIS campus.

By Road: Sheesh Mahal is located on the main road in the Old Moti Bagh area. It is easily accessible by car, taxi, or local bus. The Patiala Bus Stand is a 15-20 minute auto-rickshaw ride. Look for the sign leading to the NIS campus.

By Local Transport: Take an auto-rickshaw or a pre-booked taxi. The drivers are familiar with the Sheesh Mahal or the NIS campus. The campus is large, so you may need to walk a short distance from the main gate to the Mahal itself.
