Sonprayag is a significant religious site located at the confluence of two holy rivers, the Mandakini and the Basuki. Situated at an altitude of 1,829 meters, it acts as the vital gateway for all pilgrims heading toward Kedarnath. Since private vehicles are not allowed beyond this point, Sonprayag is always buzzing with activity as travelers switch to shared local jeeps for the last 5 KMS drive to Gaurikund. The name "Sonprayag" literally means the "confluence of gold," and the waters here are considered extremely pure. According to Hindu mythology, a dip in the holy waters at this confluence can wash away sins and help one achieve salvation. The village is nestled in a narrow valley, surrounded by towering peaks covered in dense greenery. It offers a wide range of facilities, including registration centers for the Kedarnath yatra, medical stalls, and numerous eateries serving hot meals. The sound of the roaring rivers merging creates a powerful natural soundtrack that resonates throughout the area. For many, Sonprayag is where the spiritual journey truly intensifies, as the road ends and the path of the trek begins to feel imminent. The village also has historical ties to the Triyuginarayan temple, which is accessible via a short trek or drive from here. During the peak season, the narrow streets are filled with the chants of "Jai Bholenath" as thousands of devotees prepare for their final ascent. It is a place of transit, but also one of deep reflection and preparation.

By Air: The nearest airport is Jolly Grant in Dehradun, about 226 KMS away, followed by a long mountain drive.

By Train: Rishikesh railway station is the closest, situated about 210 KMS from the Sonprayag gateway.

By Road: It is well-connected by National Highway 107, with regular buses from Rishikesh, Haridwar, and Dehradun.

By Local Transport: Once you reach Sonprayag, only government-authorized shared jeeps can take you further to Gaurikund.
