How to Reach
Zangla Palace is about 35 kms northwest of Padum: The only practical way to reach is by hiring a private taxi or booking a seat in a shared taxi from the Padum stand, with the journey taking approximately 1. 5 to 2 hours one-way due to the rough, unpaved road conditions : The fare should be negotiated as part of a full-day cultural circuit (including Stongdey and Zongkhul) with a local Kargil-Zanskar Taxi Union driver, as outside taxis are not permitted for local transport :
By Air (The Starting Point) : The nearest airports are Leh (IXL, approx. 495 kms away) or Srinagar (SXR, approx. 505 kms away), which require a multi-day road journey to reach the base town of Padum, with an overnight stop in Kargil being mandatory for acclimatization and travel logistics.
By Train (The Starting Point) : The nearest railhead is Jammu Tawi (JAT, approx. 755 kms away), requiring a further multi-day, high-altitude road journey via Kargil to reach Padum and then a local taxi to Zangla.
By Road (To Padum) : The village of Zangla is reached by road from Padum via the main valley road that continues past the town: First, the traveler must reach Padum via the seasonal Kargil-Padum road (240 kms from Kargil) or the newer, rougher Manali-Padum route : The final stretch from Padum to Zangla is done by a local taxi, which navigates a challenging, dirt-track road that is only motorable by high-clearance, four-wheel-drive vehicles during the summer open season.
