Khurai Talab

Sagar, Madhya Pradesh, India
Khurai Talab, often associated with the larger Dohela water system, is an expansive lake that has defined the geography of the town for centuries. Unlike the smaller sacred kunds, this talab was primarily designed for large-scale water storage and irrigation. It sits near the historic fort, providi ng a natural defense on one side of the structure. The talab is surrounded by a mix of old architecture and new park developments. It is a vital spot for the local ecosystem, supporting various fish species and attracting seasonal birds. For the residents of Khurai, the talab is a place for morning exercise and social gatherings. The vast expanse of water helps regulate the local microclimate, keeping the nearby areas cooler during the harsh Bundelkhand summers. Significant efforts have been made under the Smart City and local development projects to clean the lake and develop the surrounding embankment into a recreational zone. Walking here in the morning, one can see the mist rising from the water, creating a surreal landscape. The talab is also a central point for local folklore, with stories of the "Banjara" traders who helped build such reservoirs in the region.
