Matabari

Udaipur, Tripura, India
Matabari is one of the 51 Shakti Peethas of India and is the most sacred site in Tripura. According to Hindu mythology, the right foot of Goddess Sati fell here during Lord Shiva's dance of destruction. The temple was built by Maharaja Dhanya Manikya in 1501 AD after he received a divine vision in a dream. It is situated on a hillock called Kurma Pitha because its shape resembles a tortoise, which is considered highly auspicious in Tantric traditions. The temple houses two idols: the larger Tripura Sundari and the smaller Chhotima. The smaller idol was traditionally carried by the Tripura Kings during war and hunting expeditions for protection. The temple is surrounded by the vast Kalyan Sagar lake, which is home to ancient tortoises and fishes that devotees feed as a ritual. This place serves as the spiritual heart of the state and draws millions of pilgrims annually.
