Qila Anandgarh Sahib

Anandpur Sahib, Punjab, India
This is the chief and most strategically important of the five defensive forts (Qilas) built by Guru Gobind Singh Ji to protect the city of Anandpur Sahib and its residents from repeated attacks by the Mughal and Hill Rajas' forces. The name Anandgarh means "Fort of Blissful Anchor," symbolizing the security and peace it offered to the early Khalsa community. It housed the main treasury and the sacred well (Baoli Sahib), which was a crucial source of water during the long sieges. The fort played a pivotal role in the military defense of the city, especially during the protracted siege of 1705. Though mostly in ruins now, a Gurdwara stands on the site to commemorate its historical significance and the valor of the Sikh warriors. The fort's location on a hilltop provided an excellent vantage point for defense and monitoring enemy movements, making its history a testament to the military prowess of the tenth Guru.
