Reviews Of Sana Caves

Somnath, Gujarat, India
Exploring the Ancient Buddhist Heritage: The Sana Caves, also known as the Shana Dungar Buddhist Caves, are a complex of 62 rock-cut shelters located on a hill near the village of Vankiya. These caves date back to the 2nd century BCE and the 1st century CE, representing the deep-rooted influence of Buddhism in the Gujarat region. They were primarily used as residences (Viharas) and prayer halls (Chaityas) by Buddhist monks during the monsoon seasons. The caves are spread across different levels of the hill, offering a fascinating glimpse into ancient monastic life. Each cave is carved directly into the soft rock, featuring benches, water tanks, and pillars. The largest and most impressive is Cave 2, also known as Bhima-ni-Cori, which has a large hall with pillars and a stupa. The site is relatively secluded, providing a quiet escape for history buffs and trekkers. Exploring these caves requires a bit of climbing, but the panoramic view from the top of the hill is worth the effort. You can see the surrounding plains and the Shana River flowing nearby. The architecture is simple yet functional, showcasing the resourcefulness of the monks who lived here nearly two thousand years ago. Unlike the grand temples of Somnath, Sana Caves offer a raw, archaeological experience. The site is maintained by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) but remains less crowded than other tourist spots. It is a place of profound silence, where one can almost hear the echoes of ancient chants. Visiting Sana Caves is like stepping back in time, away from the modern bustle, into a world of spiritual discipline and ancient craftsmanship.
