Reviews Of St. Thomas Mount
Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India
Apostolic Martyrdom Site: St. Thomas Mount is a small hillock in Chennai revered as the traditional site where Saint Thomas, one of the twelve apostles of Jesus Christ, was martyred in 72 AD. A church, Our Lady of Expectation Church, stands atop the mount, originally built by the Portuguese in 1523. It is a major pilgrimage spot for Christians and provides a panoramic view of the city, including the Chennai International Airport. The ascent to the church is marked by the 14 Stations of the Cross. The history of the mount is inextricably linked to the arrival and ministry of Saint Thomas in India, a tradition that predates many European Christian settlements. The summit also contains a famous relic, the 'Bleeding Cross,' a stone cross believed to have been carved by Saint Thomas himself, which has ancient Pahlavi inscriptions. The tranquility of the mount, combined with its profound religious history, offers a powerful spiritual experience. The location is an enduring symbol of the early spread of Christianity in the East. The Bleeding Cross: This relic is a large stone slab with a carved cross, which allegedly used to bleed, marking its significance.
