Rongkhon Falls

Rongram, Meghalaya, India
Rongkhon Falls, also referred to as Rongkhon Dare, is a hidden gem located very close to the main urban hub of the Garo Hills. Unlike larger waterfalls that require long treks, Rongkhon is easily accessible and serves as a vital source of water for the local population. The waterfall drops from a m oderate height into a deep, circular basin that remains cool throughout the year. The area is surrounded by high cliffs draped in moss and ferns, giving it a prehistoric feel despite its proximity to the town. Local residents often visit the falls for morning walks or weekend relaxation. The sound of the waterfall is a constant background hum that adds to the tranquility of the neighborhood. During the rainy season, the volume of water increases significantly, creating a thunderous roar that can be heard from the nearby road. The site is also significant because it houses a water treatment and supply system that provides drinking water to parts of Tura. Because of this, the area is kept very clean, and swimming is sometimes restricted to protect the water quality. The path to the waterfall is lined with traditional Garo houses, providing a glimpse into the local lifestyle. It is a perfect spot for those who have limited time but want to experience the natural beauty of Meghalaya. The interplay of light and shadow through the dense trees creates a magical atmosphere during the late afternoon.
