Saath Kabar

Bijapur, Karnataka, India
Saath Kabar, or the "Sixty Graves," is perhaps the most tragic and haunting site in all of Bijapur. It is the burial ground of the 63 wives of Afzal Khan, the legendary general of the Adil Shahi army. According to the dark legend, before setting out to fight the Maratha king Chhatrapati Shivaji Mah araj in 1659, Afzal Khan consulted an astrologer who predicted his certain death in the battle. Driven by a twisted sense of possessiveness and fear that his wives would remarry after his death, he allegedly ordered them to be drowned in a nearby well and then buried. The site consists of a large masonry platform with row upon row of identical stone graves, with one grave left empty (intended for a wife who escaped). The atmosphere here is somber and quiet, tucked away in a remote area away from the main tourist hubs. The site serves as a grim reminder of the absolute power and the dark side of medieval history. While the graves themselves are simple and lack the architectural grandeur of the Sultan's tombs, the sheer number and the story behind them make it a powerful experience. Most tourists visit this place to reflect on the tragic history rather than for architectural beauty. The site is surrounded by fields and remains largely un-commercialized, preserving its eerie and desolate charm.

Dimensions: The platform is about 150 feet long. The graves are made of dark basalt stone and are arranged in five neat rows. Near the graves is the "well of death" where the women were reportedly drowned. The architecture is purely functional, lacking the ornate carvings found in other Bijapur monuments, which adds to its stark, tragic feel.
