Travel Tips Of Pratap Nagar
Chamba, Uttarakhand, India
Pratap Nagar was founded in 1877 by Raja Pratap Shah, the third ruler of the Tehri Garhwal dynasty. He chose this location to escape the sweltering summer heat of the old Tehri town, which was located at a much lower altitude. The town is built on a narrow ridge that provides a rare dual view: the snow-capped Great Himalayas on the north side and the vast expanse of the Tehri Lake on the south side. Historically, it was a flourishing administrative hub with a palace, treasury, and court buildings, though many of these are now in ruins or have been repurposed. The village offers a deep dive into the rural lifestyle of Garhwal, where traditions are still intact. It is far less commercialized than other hill stations, making it an ideal spot for offbeat travelers and history buffs. The surrounding forests are thick with oak and rhododendron, providing a peaceful environment for trekking. In recent years, it has gained popularity as a base for paragliding, offering one of the most scenic flight paths over the Tehri Lake. Visiting Pratap Nagar is like stepping back into the 19th-century royal era of the hills.
