Travel Tips Of Sri Aurobindo Ashram

Puducherry, India
The Sri Aurobindo Ashram is a spiritual community and one of the most famous ashrams in the world, founded in 1926 by Sri Aurobindo Ghose and his spiritual collaborator, Mirra Alfassa, affectionately known as The Mother. The Ashram is not a religious institution but a center for the practice of Inte gral Yoga, a synthesis of yoga, spirituality, and worldly life aiming for a 'life divine' on Earth. It is a sprawling network of about 400 buildings scattered throughout the city, which house its various departments and over 2,000 sadhaks (spiritual seekers). The focal point is the Samadhi, a marble shrine located in the main building's central courtyard, which contains the mortal remains of Sri Aurobindo and The Mother. Visitors come here for quiet contemplation and meditation. Unlike many traditional ashrams, the life of a sadhak involves working in one of the community's departments (like agriculture, education, press, or furniture-making) as a form of spiritual discipline, making the Ashram a vibrant, decentralized community that plays a major role in Puducherry's cultural and economic life. The strict maintenance of silence in the central area provides a stark contrast to the busy streets outside, offering an intense atmosphere of peace and reflection.

Tourism Tips

Health and Safety: Observe strict silence and reverence, particularly in the Samadhi area. Phones must be switched off. Children under a certain age are often not permitted in the central area.

Packing Essentials: Dress modestly in clean, comfortable attire that covers shoulders and knees as a sign of respect. Carry a thin scarf or shawl for sitting meditation.

Accommodation Advice: While the Ashram offers limited accommodation for serious sadhaks, tourists should book hotels in White Town or nearby areas for easy access and a full cultural experience.

Other Tips - Read Up: Read a brief introduction to Sri Aurobindo's philosophy, such as The Mother's 'Prayers and Meditations,' before visiting to appreciate the deeper spiritual significance of the place.
