Vijaygarh Fort
Vijaygarh Fort is a majestic hill fort standing tall on the Kaimur hills. It is famously associated with the classic Hindi novel Chandrakanta by Devaki Nandan Khatri. Built originally in the 5th century by the Kol kings and later renovated by Maharaja Vijay Pal in 1040 AD, the fort is a treasure tr ove of history, mystery, and natural beauty. The most intriguing feature of this fort is its perennial water tanks—Mira Sagar and Ram Sagar—which never dry up, regardless of the season. The fort is surrounded by steep cliffs and dense forests, making it nearly impregnable in ancient times. Inside, one can find ancient rock inscriptions, cave paintings, and the tomb of Hazrat Meeran Shah Baba. The trek up to the fort is an adventure in itself, offering sweeping views of the Son river valley. It is a site where history meets legend, attracting historians, trekkers, and fans of the Chandrakanta fantasy series.
