Barda Hills Wildlife Sanctuary

Porbandar, Gujarat, India
The Barda Hills Wildlife Sanctuary is a dense, hilly forest tract that serves as a vital ecological buffer against the salinity of the coastal region. Established in 1979, it covers an area of approximately 192.31 sq km across the districts of Porbandar and Jamnagar. Historically, this land was div ided between the princely states of Rana Barda and Jam Barda. The sanctuary is renowned for its immense floral diversity, hosting over 650 plant species, many of which possess significant medicinal properties. It is a haven for mammalian species like leopards, hyenas, wild boars, and chinkara. The sanctuary also features two major dams, Khambala and Fodara, which enhance its scenic beauty. It has been proposed as a second home for the Asiatic Lion, making it a site of high conservation importance. The lush valleys and rocky terrains provide a stark, beautiful contrast to the surrounding agricultural plains.
