Bhutanatha Group of Temples

Badami, Karnataka, India
The Bhutanatha Group of Temples is a cluster of sandstone shrines dedicated to Lord Bhutanatha, a form of Shiva. Located on the eastern edge of Agastya Lake, the temple appears to emerge directly from the water during the monsoon season. The main temple (Bhutanatha Temple 1) dates back to the 7th C entury and showcases early Chalukyan architecture, while the smaller shrines nearby were built by the later Kalyani Chalukyas. The temple's position against the backdrop of massive, rugged boulders creates one of the most picturesque scenes in South India. The interior of the main shrine is dark and atmospheric, with a linga in the sanctum and beautiful carvings of Ganga and Yamuna on the doorway. Behind the temple, there are various rock-cut sculptures on the boulders, including representations of the ten avatars of Vishnu. The site is much quieter than the cave temples, offering a sense of peace and spiritual solitude. It is the perfect place to sit and watch the sun set over the lake. The architecture reflects a transition from the early style of the caves to more refined structural temples. It is an integral part of the Badami heritage walk and is highly recommended for those seeking tranquility.
