Our Lady of Ransom Church is a magnificent and historic Catholic church located near the Kanyakumari beach, a dazzling example of Gothic architecture with a subtle Portuguese influence. Dedicated to Mother Mary (known locally as Alangara Upakara Matha, combining 'Ransom' with 'Delight'), the current , splendid structure had its foundation stone laid in 1900 and was completed in a blend of ancient Gothic and Roman styles, replacing a significant church built in 1700 AD. Its beauty is enhanced by its spectacular setting against the backdrop of the blue ocean. The most striking exterior feature is the 153-foot high central tower, which is crowned with a cross made of pure gold, making it a major landmark visible from the sea. Inside, the church is renowned for its colorful stained glass windows that cast multi-hued light into the main building. The altar features a revered saree-clad statue of Mother Mary (brought from Rome to an older version of the church in the 18th century), flanked by statues of St. Joseph and St. Francis Xavier. The church's detailed wooden carvings depict scenes like the coronation of Mary and angels playing musical instruments, showcasing exquisite craftsmanship and deep religious history dating back to the arrival of St. Francis Xavier in 1542.
