Government Botanical Garden

Ooty, Tamil Nadu, India
Established in 1848 by Marquis of Tweedale, the Government Botanical Garden is a sprawling, meticulously maintained 55-acre garden on the lower slopes of the Doddabetta peak. It is maintained by the Horticulture Department of Tamil Nadu and is one of India's oldest and finest gardens. The garden is divided into several sections, including the Lower Garden, the New Garden, the Italian Garden, the Conservatory, and the Nurseries. It is a major repository of native and exotic plant species, boasting over a thousand varieties of plants, shrubs, ferns, and trees. Key attractions include a 20 million-year-old fossilized tree trunk from the Upper Cretaceous period, a beautiful Italian-style garden, a vast array of flowering annuals, and unique trees like the Cork Tree and the Monkey Puzzle Tree. The garden is most famous for hosting the annual Ooty Flower Show in May, a celebrated event attracting millions.

Victorian and Italian Landscape Architecture: The garden's layout is a fascinating mix of formal and informal Victorian and Italian styles, covering an area of approximately 22 hectares (54 acres).

Terraced Layout and Lawns: The garden ascends the hill in a terraced layout, designed by William Graham McIvor. The Lower Garden features an extensive, lush green lawn of Kikuyu grass (known for its springy vigour), creating a massive "green carpet.

" The Italian Garden: This section, laid out by Italian prisoners of war during World War I, is a classic formal garden with patterned flowerbeds, a central octagonal bandstand, and lily ponds. It showcases symmetry and artistry with its use of colour and form.

The Conservatory and Glass House: Features a beautiful historical building (now a heritage structure) and a large glass house constructed in 1912, used for cultivating exotic, temperature-sensitive plants like Begonias, Cacti, and Orchids, demonstrating early 20th-century horticultural engineering.
