Guruduwara Shri Goindwal Sahib
Goindwal Sahib is a site of immense historical importance as it was the first organized Sikh center. It was established by Shri Guru Amar Das Ji, the third Sikh Guru, in the 16th century. The Guru lived here for 33 years, making it the headquarters of the Sikh faith before the establishment of Amri tsar. The most famous feature here is the Baoli Sahib, a deep well with 84 steps descending to the water level. It is spiritually believed that reciting the Japji Sahib on each step leads to Moksha (liberation) from the cycle of 84 lakh births. This site also hosted Emperor Akbar, who famously sat on the floor of the Langar hall to eat with commoners before meeting the Guru, reinforcing the Sikh principle of equality. The town is situated on the banks of the Beas River, providing a scenic and spiritual backdrop. Many important historical events occurred here, including the birth of Guru Arjan Dev Ji. The shrine complex includes the Chaubara Sahib, the ancestral home of the Gurus, where several sacred relics are preserved. Goindwal remains a vibrant center for the Manji System, the administrative structure established by the third Guru to spread Sikhism across India.
