Vindhyachal, Uttar Pradesh, India
The Kankali Devi Temple is an ancient and spiritually charged shrine located in the heart of the Vindhya range. This temple is dedicated to a fierce form of Goddess Kali, known as Kankali Devi, which literally translates to the "Skeleton Goddess." According to local legends, the goddess took this e maciated form to devour the blood of demons without letting a single drop fall to the earth, thus preventing their multiplication. The atmosphere here is thick with devotion and the scent of incense. Pilgrims believe that worshipping here helps in overcoming health issues and removing negative energies from one's life. The temple is part of the broader Shakti Peeth culture of Vindhyachal, though it offers a more quiet and contemplative experience compared to the main shrine. The surrounding area is filled with smaller shrines and old trees that have witnessed centuries of prayers. Visiting this temple provides a deep insight into the tantric traditions that once flourished in this region. The deity's idol is unique, carved with intricate details that depict the skeletal form of the goddess, symbolizing the ultimate truth of mortality and the power of the divine beyond physical form. It is a place where faith meets ancient history.
