Hotels Near Kapaleeshwarar Temple

Chennai, Tamil Nadu, Country Name:India
Architectural History and Reconstruction:The original Kapaleeshwarar Temple is believed to have been built by the Pallavas in the 7th century CE near the current San Thome Basilica. After its destruction by the Portuguese in 1566 AD, the present structure was rebuilt by the Vijayanagara kings in the 16th century in the distinct Dravidian style of architecture, though some features suggest an earlier structure. The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva (as Kapaleeshwarar) and his consort Goddess Parvati (as Karpagambal). It is a Paadal Petra Sthalam, revered in the Tevaram hymns by the Nayanar saints, indicating its great antiquity.Mythology and Legend:The temple's name, Kapaleeshwarar, is linked to the legend where Lord Shiva removed one of Lord Brahma's five heads (Kapala) for disrespect. Another central legend is the peacock (Mayil in Tamil), which gave the neighbourhood its name, Mylapore ("town of the peacock"). Legend says Goddess Parvati took the form of a peacock here to worship Lord Shiva to regain her original form, which is symbolized by the shrine of Karpagambal and a sculpture of a peacock outside the shrine. This mythology is central to the temple's identity.Spiritual Significance:The temple is one of the most prominent religious sites in Chennai and a focal point for the local community, especially during festivals like Arubathimoovar and Navaratri. The bronze idols of the 63 Nayanars (Saivite saints) are a notable feature, and one of the saints, Vayilar Nayanar, was born in Mylapore. The temple's tank, the Mylapore Tank, is large and is used for the Theppam (float) festival. The spiritual atmosphere is vibrant and deeply traditional, with daily rituals and pujas performed meticulously. The temple continues to be a living example of Tamil religious culture.Cultural Hub:The temple forms the core of the Mylapore neighborhood, surrounded by traditional market streets (Mada Veethis) selling flowers, traditional crafts, and food, making it a cultural and commercial hub. It is administered by the Hindu Religious and Endowment Board of the Government of Tamil Nadu.
