How To Reach Bairat Khai

Chakrata, Uttarakhand, India
Bairat Khai, often endearingly called The Princess of Hills, is an enthralling high-altitude destination near Chakrata renowned for its stunning, unobstructed, and panoramic 180-degree view of the mighty snow-covered Himalayan peaks which are visible almost throughout the year. Nestled at an approxi mate altitude of 1,990 meters (6,529 feet) above sea level, this scenic spot offers a tranquil and serene escape from the frenetic pace of urban life. The area is cradled by two notable peaks: the Chorani Dhar to the west, standing at about 2,300 meters, and the Julioki Dhar to the east, which is locally known as Tiger Hill at 2,150 meters. It serves as a true haven for nature enthusiasts, trekkers, and those simply seeking peace and quiet amidst magnificent natural beauty. The vista is particularly breathtaking during sunrise and sunset, casting golden hues over the peaks. The journey to Bairat Khai itself is a beautiful experience, winding through lush greenery and dense forests of deodar and pine, adding to the allure of this relatively untouched hill station. The air is crisp and invigorating, typical of the high Himalayas, making it a perfect spot for relaxation and rejuvenation. This location provides an excellent viewpoint not just of the majestic peaks but also of the surrounding deep valleys and thick deodar forests. The sheer scale of the landscape viewed from this point is humbling, making it a favorite stop for tourists visiting the Chakrata region. The uncommercialized nature of the location has helped maintain its pristine charm and raw, natural appeal, distinguishing it from more crowded hill stations.

How to Reach

By Air: The closest major airport is Jolly Grant Airport (DED) in Dehradun, which is situated approximately 125 kilometers away from Bairat Khai (via Chakrata). The airport is well-connected to major Indian cities like Delhi, Mumbai, and Bangalore. From the airport, the most practical way to reach is by hiring a pre-booked private taxi or a direct cab service, which takes around 4-5 hours depending on road conditions. There are no direct bus services from the airport to this remote location.

By Train: The nearest major railway station is the Dehradun Railway Station (DDN), located roughly 115 kilometers from Bairat Khai. This station is a primary rail head, connected extensively to the national rail network, including popular trains like the Shatabdi Express from Delhi. From Dehradun station, travelers can easily hire a taxi directly to Bairat Khai or take a bus to Chakrata town, then hire a local taxi for the final 25-kilometer stretch. The road journey from the station typically takes between 3. 5 to 4. 5 hours.

By Road: Bairat Khai is best reached by road. It is about 25 kilometers east of Chakrata town, accessible via the main road connecting Chakrata and Vikas Nagar. The road from Dehradun (approx. 125 km) via Vikas Nagar and Kalsi is the most common route, offering stunning views and taking about 4-5 hours. State transport buses and private shared taxis (often Maxi Cabs or Jeeps) are available from Dehradun ISBT to Chakrata. From Chakrata market, one must hire a local cab to cover the final 25 kilometers to the viewpoint. Private vehicles and self-driving are also excellent options, but caution is advised on the winding mountain roads.

By Local Transport: From the main Chakrata market or taxi stand, the only practical local transport is a hired taxi (private or shared jeep). The 25 KMS distance is not easily covered by walking, and public bus services are very infrequent, making a dedicated local taxi essential for visiting the viewpoint and returning.
