How To Reach Budher Caves

Chakrata, Uttarakhand, India
The Budher Caves, also widely known as the Miola Caves, are a captivating and geologically significant natural attraction situated near the village of Lokhandi, around 30 kilometers from the main town of Chakrata. Perched at an altitude of approximately 2,800 meters (9,186 feet), these ancient caves are composed of limestone and are renowned for their intricate geological formations, including stunning stalactites and stalagmites—columns, cones, and sheets of mineral deposits created over millennia by dripping water. More than their geological marvel, the caves are steeped in rich local folklore and mythological history. Local legends robustly assert that the caves were carved out and used by the Pandavas, the five heroic brothers from the epic Mahabharata, as a secret hideout or temporary shelter during their period of exile (Vanvaas). The name "Miola Caves" is believed to have originated from a German explorer named Miola, who is rumored to have discovered or extensively mapped them in the past. Access to the caves requires a moderate trek of about 2.5 to 3 kilometers from the Budher Forest Rest House (FRH), which takes visitors through dense, picturesque forests of deodar and pine, eventually leading to the beautiful Moila Top meadow, close to the cave entrance. The caves are dark and narrow inside, offering a thrilling experience for intrepid spelunkers and history enthusiasts alike. A torch is absolutely essential for the exploration. The surrounding area, including the nearby Moila Top, offers commanding views of the grand Himalayan peaks, such as Bandarpoonch and Swargarohini, adding a beautiful natural reward to the adventurous journey.

How to Reach

By Air: The nearest airport is Jolly Grant Airport (DED) in Dehradun (approx. 150 km). From the airport, hire a pre-booked taxi directly to the base village of Lokhandi or the Budher Forest Rest House (FRH). The drive is long and takes around 5-6 hours.

By Train: The nearest major railway station is the Dehradun Railway Station (DDN) (approx. 140 km). From the station, take a bus or hire a taxi to Chakrata (around 90-100 km). From Chakrata town, hire a local cab or shared jeep to reach Lokhandi village or the Budher FRH (approx. 30 km away, about 1-1. 5 hours drive).

By Road: Budher is located about 30 km from Chakrata town. The road is motorable up to Lokhandi village or the Budher FRH. From major cities, follow the route to Dehradun, then take the NH7 towards Vikas Nagar, and finally the road to Chakrata. From Chakrata, the last leg is a winding, narrow mountain road to the starting point. Self-driving is possible, but a local driver or hired cab is recommended due to the challenging terrain.

By Local Transport: The final 3 KM stretch from the roadhead/FRH to the caves is strictly a moderate trek and is not motorable. Local taxis and shared jeeps are available from Chakrata town to drop visitors at the Lokhandi roadhead, but a dedicated local guide is essential for the trek itself, as the trail is not always well-marked.
