How To Reach Camel's Back Road

Mussoorie, Uttarakhand, India
Colonial Heritage Pathway:Camel's Back Road is a 3-kilometer-long, winding stretch of road that traces the eastern and southern ridge of Mussoorie, connecting two major commercial points: Library Point (Gandhi Chowk) and Kulri Bazaar on the Mall Road. The road was laid out during the British colonia l era in the 19th century and was primarily intended for leisurely horseback riding and quiet, evening strolls for the European residents, away from the hustle and bustle of the main bazaar. It derives its distinctive name from a prominent natural rock formation visible from this path, which bears a striking resemblance to the hump and neck of a sitting camel. This scenic route is famously pedestrian-friendly, with motor traffic strictly limited, maintaining its peaceful ambiance. It offers breathtaking, continuous, panoramic views of the entire Doon Valley and the distant snow-clad Himalayan peaks, which are most spectacular during sunrise and sunset. The road is lined with ancient Deodar and Pine trees, old colonial-style homes, and rustic benches, making it a perfect spot for photography, reflection, and quiet conversation. It is a vital artery of Mussoorie's social and recreational life, offering a historic window into the town's past as a British hill station. A walk along this road is considered a quintessential Mussoorie experience, representing the tranquil and picturesque essence of the 'Queen of Hills.' The well-maintained asphalt path makes it suitable for all ages, from morning joggers to elderly walkers, and the relatively level gradient ensures a comfortable, enjoyable experience for the entire 3-kilometer stretch.:

How to Reach

By Air:The nearest airport is Jolly Grant Airport (DED) in Dehradun, approximately 60 kilometers away. From the airport, hire a pre-paid taxi to either Library Point or Kulri Bazaar in Mussoorie. Camel's Back Road is easily accessible by foot from both these points.

By Train:The nearest railway station is Dehradun Railway Station (DDN), about 30 kilometers away. From Dehradun, take a taxi or bus to the Mussoorie Bus Stand (near Library Point). The road starts literally a few hundred meters from the Library Bus Stand.

By Road:Mussoorie is well-connected by National Highway to Dehradun and other major cities. Once you reach the main Mussoorie town, you can park your vehicle near Library Point or Kulri Bazaar (parking can be challenging) and start the walk. Vehicle entry onto the road itself is often restricted.

By Local Transport:The road is an attraction in itself and is a walking path. From any point on the Mall Road, you can easily walk to either end of Camel's Back Road. Local cycle rickshaws or taxis can take you to the starting points if you are staying farther away, but the road's true experience is on foot. :
