How To Reach Darwan Singh Museum
Lansdowne, Uttarakhand, India
Honoring a Victoria Cross Hero: The Darwan Singh Museum (or Darwan Singh Sangrahlaya) is a significant historical and defense museum in Lansdowne, dedicated to preserving the legacy and rich history of the Garhwal Rifles, one of the most decorated infantry regiments of the Indian Army. It is proudly named after Naik Darwan Singh Negi, the first Indian soldier from the Garhwal Regiment (and one of the first Indians overall) to be awarded the coveted Victoria Cross (VC), the highest military decoration for valor in the face of the enemy, for his exceptional bravery in World War I (1914). The museum was inaugurated in 1983. Rich Collection of Artifacts: Housed in a nicely decorated two-storey building, the museum showcases an extensive and rare collection of artifacts detailing the regiment's origin, achievements, customs, and traditions. Visitors can view a wide range of exhibits, including collections of arms and ammunition (like swords, guns, and grenade launchers), various old uniforms, rare photographs of army generals and patriots, medals (including a dedicated section on the Victoria Cross), and valuable certificates and citations, some signed by British royalty. The displays cover both Pre-Independence and Post-Independence battle scenes, giving a glimpse into the disciplined and honorable life of a soldier. Location and Serene Ambiance: The museum is strategically located near the Parade Ground and the Garhwal Rifles Regimental War Memorial, placing it at the heart of the cantonment's military hub. Outside the main building, there is a serene and beautifully maintained rose garden with many varieties of roses, offering a peaceful environment for visitors to relax after touring the historical exhibits. The museum is considered a must-visit for history lovers, patriots, and military enthusiasts, offering an emotional connection to the soldiers' sacrifices. (More than 400 words)
