How To Reach George Everest House

Mussoorie, Uttarakhand, India
The Surveyor's Historical Retreat:George Everest House, officially known as The Park Estate, is the former residence, laboratory, and observatory of Sir George Everest, the famed Welsh geographer and Surveyor General of India from 1830 to 1843. It is situated on a cliff edge at Park Estate, approxim ately 6 kilometers from Library Point in Mussoorie. This location served as the primary observation station for the Great Trigonometrical Survey of India, which famously measured the height of the world's highest peak (peak XV) and led to it being named Mount Everest after Sir George. The structure today stands in a state of picturesque ruin, consisting of crumbling stone walls, empty window frames, and the remnants of the original laboratory, which gives it a powerful, haunting, and historical atmosphere. The site offers a short, manageable 1.5 to 2-kilometer trek from the main road (Hathipaon junction), making the journey part of the overall experience. Its major draw is the absolutely spectacular, uninterrupted 360-degree panoramic view it offers: sweeping vistas of the vast Doon Valley on one side and the majestic, snow-capped Himalayan ranges on the other, including clear views of Banderpooch and Gangotri. The Government has begun minor restoration and has added an Archaeological Survey of India Museum nearby to preserve the site's history. Visiting this isolated spot is a pilgrimage for history enthusiasts, trekkers, and anyone seeking the grandest views in the region, embodying the spirit of exploration and colonial-era science.:

How to Reach

By Air:The nearest airport is Jolly Grant Airport (DED) in Dehradun, approximately 60 kilometers away. From the airport, hire a direct taxi to the Hathipaon junction on the way to the house. The final 1. 5-2 km walk/trek starts from the Hathipaon parking area.

By Train:The nearest railway station is Dehradun Railway Station (DDN), about 30 kilometers away. From Dehradun, take a taxi to the Mussoorie Bus Stand (Library Point). From there, you must hire a local private taxi specifically for the return trip to the Hathipaon area.

By Road:The George Everest House is located about 6 km from Library Point via the winding Hathipaon Road. The road is motorable up to a designated parking area, but the final, essential part of the journey is the scenic walk/trek up the hill, which takes around 30-45 minutes.

By Local Transport:From the main parts of Mussoorie (Mall Road), the most convenient way is to hire a dedicated private taxi for a return trip to the Hathipaon base of the house. Shared taxis are available but less frequent on this route. Alternatively, you can hire a horse from the base to ride up the path. :
