Shiva as Vaidyanath: The Mahakal Temple in Baijnath, more famously known as Baijnath Temple or Vaidyanath Temple, is a revered shrine dedicated to Lord Shiva as Vaidyanath, the 'Lord of Physicians'. It is believed to be one of the twelve Jyotirlingas (sacred abodes of Shiva), adding immense spiritua l significance.Historical Construction: The current temple structure was built in 1204 A.D. by two local merchant brothers named Ahuka and Manyuka, whose history is inscribed on stone slabs within the main hall.Mythological Link to Ravana: A famous legend connects the temple to the demon king Ravana, who is believed to have worshipped Shiva here and was tricked into placing the Shivlinga on the ground, making it immovable and the site for the temple's foundation.Non-Celebration of Dussehra: A unique and famous aspect is that the town of Baijnath does not celebrate the festival of Dussehra out of respect for Ravana, who was a great devotee of Shiva.:

How to Reach

By Air: The nearest airport is Gaggal Airport (Dharamshala) (DHM), about 50 KMS away. From the airport, hire a taxi to Baijnath.

By Train: The nearest broad-gauge station is Pathankot (PTK/PTKC), approx. 130 KMS away. The nearest narrow-gauge station is Baijnath Paprola (approx. 5 KMS), which is well-connected to Pathankot.

By Road: Baijnath is located directly on the Pathankot-Manali National Highway No. 154. State-run and private buses from Palampur (16 KMS) and other major towns ply regularly. From Palampur, a local bus or taxi takes about 30 minutes.

By Local Transport: Local auto-rickshaws and taxis are easily available from Palampur to reach Baijnath town. :
