How To Reach Rahmatpur Forest
Roorkee, Uttarakhand, India
Rahmatpur Forest is a sprawling green expanse located on the outskirts of Roorkee. Unlike the hilly forests of the upper Himalayas, this is a typical sub-tropical broadleaf forest of the 'Terai' region. It serves as an important 'lung' for the industrial and educational hub of Roorkee, providing a much-needed sanctuary for local biodiversity. The forest is characterized by dense stands of Sal, Shisham, and Eucalyptus trees, which create a thick canopy that remains cool even during the peak of summer. For the residents of Roorkee, Rahmatpur is the go-to spot for a quick nature getaway without having to drive into the mountains. The area is home to a variety of small mammals like Nilgai (Blue Bull), wild boars, and various species of deer. It is also a haven for resident and migratory birds, making it a hotspot for local ornithologists. The forest floor is often covered in a carpet of dry leaves, and the air is filled with the scent of wild flora and the constant chirping of crickets. Exploring the forest tracks provides a sense of adventure, as the trails wind through thickets where the sunlight filters through in beautiful beams. It is a place of quiet contemplation, far removed from the honking horns of the Delhi-Haridwar highway. The forest also plays a crucial role in maintaining the groundwater levels of the region. Many visitors come here for morning jogs or weekend cycles along the forest perimeter. It is a reminder of the natural heritage that once covered this entire belt of Northern India before urbanization took over. :
