How To Reach Sea Turtle Hatchery

Agatti, Lakshadweep, India
A Beacon of Marine Conservation: The Sea Turtle Hatchery on Agatti Island is a crucial conservation facility dedicated to the protection and proliferation of sea turtle species, primarily the endangered Green Turtle and the critically endangered Hawksbill Turtle. Established and run by the local For est Department or an associated research body, the hatchery plays a vital role in increasing the survival rate of hatchlings, which face numerous threats in the wild. The facility operates by carefully collecting sea turtle eggs from vulnerable beach nests and incubating them in a safe, controlled environment until they hatch. Once the hatchlings are strong enough, they are released into the sea, primarily at night or in the early morning, to maximize their chances of survival. The hatchery is not a large, commercial tourist attraction but a functioning conservation project, offering visitors a unique and educational opportunity to witness firsthand the dedicated efforts to protect these majestic marine reptiles. The focus is strictly on the well-being of the turtles, making visits educational and respectful. It underscores Lakshadweep's strong commitment to eco-tourism and environmental preservation. Learning about the nesting process, the species' life cycles, and the threats they face provides a deeply moving and educational experience, highlighting the fragility of the marine ecosystem and the importance of human intervention for conservation. The site's location on the less-trafficked Southern Shore also emphasizes the need for minimal disturbance to the nesting beaches.:

How to Reach

By Air: Fly to Agatti Aerodrome (AGX) from Cochin (COK). From the airport, the Southern Shore location of the hatchery is approximately 4 KM away.

By Train: Not applicable, as the nearest station is on the mainland. Travel to Kochi and then transfer to the airport or a ship.

By Road: Local transport on Agatti consists of Auto-rickshaws and Bicycles. The hatchery is best reached by hiring an Auto-rickshaw for the 4 KM journey, as the walk is long and exposed to the sun. The ride is scenic as it traverses the length of the island to the less-developed southern tip.

By Local Transport: The availability of local transport lessens as you approach the far southern tip, so it is advisable to pre-arrange a return pick-up time with your Auto-rickshaw driver or to rent a Bicycle for the entire day for flexible movement across the island. :
